Does carbon content determine the quality of cemented carbide?

The amount of carbon content determines the quality of cemented carbide. Excessive carbon content is called carburization. Too much carbon will cause the carbon to be unable to combine in the alloy. Finally, the surface of the alloy will be dark, smooth, and slippery to the touch, resulting in the alloy being unable to be welded and the strength of the cemented carbide also being reduced. Too little carbon content is called decarburization. The formation of white spots on the surface of cemented carbide indicates a lack of carbon in the alloy structure. The lack of carbon will cause the alloy to be very brittle and may break if lightly tapped.
